Universität Siegen: Overview and History
Universität Siegen was founded in 1972 as a Gesamthochschule (a comprehensive university) and transformed into a full-fledged university, adopting its current name in 2003. This transformation strengthened the university's academic profile and increased its research capacity. Siegen hosts significant research centers, particularly in media studies within the cultural and social sciences, as well as in fundamental and applied sensor technologies and nanosciences. The university's philosophy, "Zukunft menschlich gestalten" (Shaping the Future Humanely), emphasizes that education and research should focus not only on technological advancement but also on societal benefit and ethical values. This approach aims to equip students with not only knowledge but also critical thinking and the skills to contribute to society. Despite its relatively young age, the university is recognized as one of Germany's leading research institutions, reinforcing its research prowess through its membership in the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).
Academic Programs and Research Focus Areas
Universität Siegen offers a wide range of bachelor's and master's programs. With over 130 programs across its faculties of engineering sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, economics, and educational sciences, it opens up diverse career paths for students. The Faculty of Engineering, in particular, is popular among international students for its programs in fields like Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The university's research focus areas stand out with internationally recognized work. Media studies examine the societal impacts of digitalization, while sensor technologies and nanosciences develop innovative solutions that shape future technologies. These research areas offer students opportunities to work on current topics and participate in scientific projects. Siegen University aims to best prepare its graduates for the professional world and academic careers by providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Frequently Asked Questions
I've been accepted to Siegen University, but I don't have a language course or dormitory registration. Will arranging a language course in Aachen cause problems? ▼
Yes, this situation could cause problems for your visa application and initial registration processes in Germany. When applying for a visa to study in Germany, you're usually asked for proof of a language course registration or university admission in the city where you'll be living. Additionally, after arriving in Germany, you'll need a Siegen address for your 'Anmeldung' (registration of residence). Since Aachen is a different city, it could conflict with your university registration in Siegen. The best approach is to arrange your language course and accommodation in Siegen, the city where you've been accepted. Otherwise, visa officers or the foreigners' office (Ausländerbehörde) might question this discrepancy.
I experienced a technical error on a university's application portal; will I encounter similar issues at Universität Siegen? ▼
The technical issue you mentioned is usually specific to that university's own application portal (in this example, Technische Universität Chemnitz). Universität Siegen's application process and portal might be different. If you encounter a similar problem when applying to Siegen University, first check your internet connection and the browser you're using. If the issue persists, the best course of action is to contact Universität Siegen's International Office or student administration (Studierendensekretariat) directly. They will provide you with the most current and accurate information.
Is Universität Siegen a member of Uni-Assist? ▼
No, according to our database, Universität Siegen is not a member of Uni-Assist. This means you'll need to submit your applications directly through the university's own portal or application system. It's important to check the university's official website for the most up-to-date information on the application process and required documents.
What are the job opportunities for students in Siegen? ▼
While not as extensive as in larger metropolises, Siegen does offer part-time job opportunities (Werkstudent or Minijob) for students. Positions in retail, gastronomy, logistics, or as university assistants are common. Your German language skills and flexibility will increase your chances of finding a job. The university's career services office can also support students in their job search.
How do students get around while studying at Siegen University? ▼
Students at Siegen University can generally use public transportation (buses, trams, regional trains) within the Nordrhein-Westfalen state for free or at a heavily discounted rate, thanks to the Semesterticket (semester contribution for public transport). This makes transportation between campuses and within the city quite easy and economical. Siegen is also a bicycle-friendly city.

How do I apply to Universität Siegen as an international student?
Non-EU applicants apply via uni-assist (document verification + APS certificate for some countries). EU applicants apply directly. You need a recognised degree, language certificate, motivation letter and CV. After admission, open a Sperrkonto and book a visa appointment at your local German embassy.
- Pick a programme — Browse the programme list above — filter by language, degree, field.
- Verify your eligibility — Check Anabin/APS for your country and degree-equivalence rules.
- Get language certificate — TestDaF/DSH for German, IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programmes.
- Apply via uni-assist or directly — Submit by 15 July (winter) / 15 January (summer) deadlines.
- After admission: Sperrkonto + visa — Open the blocked account, get health insurance, attend embassy interview.
