Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology (Vor- und Frühgeschichtliche Archäologie) is a historical cultural science. Based on material remains (finds and features), it researches the environment, economy, and social organization forms of early humanity, as well as art, customs, and religion, insofar as they have material manifestations. Its goal is the analysis and reconstruction of cultural-historical contexts and development processes in epochs before significant historical records. The study covers periods from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Copper Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age. At the Würzburg department, teaching focuses particularly on the cultural-historical epochs of southern Central Europe from the early Neolithic period (from approx. 5500 BC) through the Bronze and Iron Ages to the late Celts and the Germanic peoples of the Roman Imperial period (first centuries AD).
