Politics - Bachelor of ArtsPolitics

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Political Science program examines how social and political ideas and interests are implemented in the state, institutions, parties, formal and informal social forces, and international relations. It also looks at the forms of political will formation and their results. In addition to this content perspective, political science has its own theories and methods, which are learned during the study program. Students acquire scientific basic and key qualifications for analyzing texts and statistics. Besides theoretical and methodological skills, the study also provides communicative competencies to understand, classify, evaluate, and communicate political phenomena in various social areas. Students take a total of nine modules in Political Theory and History of Ideas, Comparative Political Science, Political Sociology, and International Politics, with different content options in each module. Students can also set their own focus in individual areas (Theory, Comparative Political Science, International Relations). The B.A. program leads to a professional qualification after six semesters. In addition to Political Science, students must study another B.A. subject of their choice to the same extent. Popular combinations include various language and literature studies, history and philosophy, communication sciences, and artistic subjects, as well as economics or public law. The program also includes 'Optional Studies' with language courses, rhetoric and writing practice, or the possibility to study a third subject (to a lesser extent) or choose a political science specialization. A 360-hour internship is also part of the program. A special feature at the University of Greifswald is the possibility of a four-year Bachelor's degree in Political Science. This so-called BachelorPlus (International) extends the regular three-year Bachelor's program with an additional year abroad.
