Klassische ArchäologieClassical Archaeology

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Classical Archaeology is a historical cultural science that deals with Greek, Etruscan and Roman culture, including their precursors and after-effects, and examines the interactions with neighboring cultures. The research area is the Mediterranean region with its adjacent regions in the period between the 3rd millennium BC (Cycladic culture) to the 4th/5th century AD (beginning of the Migration Period). The research subject of Classical Archaeology comprises all material remains that are questioned according to their cultural significance, with the aim of expanding our knowledge of ancient society. It is thus a science of tracking down and deciphering traces that past cultures have left us - intentionally or by chance. This detective work includes questioning the finds and findings as 'contemporary witnesses' and critically evaluating their statements afterwards. The comparison with the written sources of ancient authors can either confirm the statement of the archaeological sources or - in the case of deviating results - draw a differentiated picture of antiquity.
