About the Program

The Historical Institute was founded in 1863 as the first in Prussia and the fourth in Germany. Nationally and internationally renowned scientists have taught and researched here, laying the foundation for the institute's current profile, which greatly contributes to the attractiveness of studying history in Greifswald. Five chairs represent the individual historical epochs, auxiliary sciences, and, across epochs, the history of certain regions. Courses are offered on Ancient History, Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern History including Contemporary History, as well as Nordic and Eastern European History. The areas of subject didactics and historical auxiliary sciences are also represented. A special focus of research and teaching is the history of the Baltic Sea region - from prehistoric times to the present - and its diverse political, economic and cultural connections to other regions in Europe and overseas. Bachelor students complete the history module in five basic and three advanced modules within the six-semester study program, each concluding with examinations at the end of the semester.
