About the Program

The Master's program in German Literary Studies is one of the few historically comprehensive Germanic master's degrees in Germany. In this Master's program, students consolidate and deepen important historical, theoretical, and methodological knowledge of literary and cultural studies from the Early Middle Ages to the present, acquiring systematic and analytical transfer skills. This literary core area is complemented by three supplementary modules in which students can set additional career-qualifying focuses from the broad spectrum of the Faculty of Philosophy. An optional practical module in the second year of study and good contacts with publishers, media, and cultural institutions, as well as the Wolfgang Koeppen Archive supervised by the Institute of German Philology, offer diverse opportunities for practical experience. The attractiveness of the program stems not least from its numerous interfaces with other disciplines: history, art and music studies, foreign language philologies, as well as philosophy and communication studies. Due to the excellent supervision ratio and the high professional qualification of the lecturers, students can expect an intensive and exciting study program in a picturesque old Hanseatic city. Students can benefit from numerous university partnerships; the Institute cooperates with several European universities (European Master: German Literature of the Middle Ages in European Context) as well as with the University of Illinois (USA). The international networks offer students the opportunity to study up to two semesters of their Master's program abroad with a scholarship, where they may also be able to obtain a degree, with all academic achievements being recognized.
