About the Program

The minor subject German as a Foreign and Second Language (DaF/DaZ) aims to expand the teaching qualification of teacher training students through foreign language didactic aspects, to prepare them for the special teaching requirements in classes with students for whom German is a second or foreign language. After completing the minor subject DaF/DaZ, teacher training students are optimally trained to teach in the context of language support classes. They are also able to better support children of non-German origin in their core subjects regarding language education. This significantly increases their employment opportunities in the current situation. The minor subject is also particularly suitable for students who aspire to teach at a German school abroad, as these are mostly multicultural encounter schools with a high proportion of German-as-a-foreign-language learners. The study of the minor subject consists of three modules: the first module, German language as a foreign language, deals with the linguistic foundations necessary for teaching the German language; the second module, DaF/DaZ in society, focuses primarily on intercultural competencies and the teacher's understanding of the learners; the third module, DaF/DaZ in teaching practice, prepares students for the didactic aspects of teaching language, literature and culture.
