Master German + English Social Sciences

Cultural and Social Science Research on Japan

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

Our one-year Master's programme is the compact version of a Master's programme, addressed to absolvents of a four-year Bachelor's programme (like the BA+). Compared to the two-years programme the modules have been reduced. The programme offers fascinating topics dealing with current developments in Japan, focusing on cultural and social change, Japan in a global context, and media and popular culture. Students will deepen their Japanese language competency for academic purposes. The programme includes advanced language courses focusing on translation of texts and discussion of current topics, insights into theories and methods for researching Modern Japan, and a module called 'Being Academic' that allows students to pursue their own academic project with a mentor. The second semester involves writing a Master's thesis.
