Classical Archaeology sees itself as a historically and art-historically oriented, interdisciplinary cultural science. It deals with the material legacy of all areas of life of Greek and Roman antiquity, from the 2nd millennium BC to late antiquity. It also includes numerous marginal and neighboring cultures, insofar as they had a cultural relationship with ancient Greece or Rome. The subject of the discipline encompasses thus the roots of European (or Oriental) art and culture and the critical transmission of their cultural memory, which have been repeatedly invoked and reinterpreted at various times in the European Occident (but also in the Islamic Orient). The balanced combination of a decidedly pictorial research approach and a research focus oriented towards archaeological excavation contexts and topographical issues, as well as the inclusion of Etruscology, which is otherwise rarely cultivated at German universities, give Classical Archaeology in Regensburg its special profile compared to other archaeological university institutes.
