Applied Linguistics

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

In contrast to the Bachelor's degree program, the syllabus concentrates entirely on Applied Linguistics as the core subject, i.e., on linguistics courses in German language and literature and English/American studies. Interdisciplinary work is, however, highly desirable. Students acquire theoretical and practical skills in the areas of language analysis and language teaching as well as in applied fields of linguistics (e.g., language in institutions, sociolinguistics and language acquisition). They are encouraged during the course of the Master's degree program to participate to an increasing degree in the Faculty's research projects. Students are given thorough training in writing and presentation skills and the handling of various types of text. The Master's thesis centers on the theory-based study of a linguistics topic and is frequently related to professional practice.
