About the Program

Egyptology at the University of Würzburg studies the entire legacy of ancient Egyptian culture from prehistory to early Christian times and its influence on neighboring areas. The field covers a period of at least 5000 years and extends geographically to an area that includes Egypt and the northern parts of today's Republic of Sudan. Egyptology is an unusually versatile science, as it deals not only with philology and literature, but also with the history, religion, administration, economy, legal history, science, art, archaeology and topography of ancient Egypt. The Chair of Egyptology at the University of Würzburg has a research focus on the Egyptian Late Period (including Ptolemaic hieroglyphs), demotic script and language, and Coptic language.
