The advanced training takes place at private and social educational institutions. For in-person events, the learning locations are classrooms. For combined learning forms (e.g., blended learning), the learning locations are classrooms for in-person events and at home for online learning units.

The profession type is an advanced training profession. The type of advanced training is according to the guidelines of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV). The duration of the advanced training is 6-7 days (full-time). First aid instructors prepare and conduct courses. They explain what to do first in accidents or emergencies, e.g., securing accident sites and making emergency calls. They discuss the symptoms and procedures for heart attacks, shock, epilepsy, or hypoglycemia. They practice with participants how to treat fractures, wounds, or burns. Furthermore, they train the course participants in the stable side position, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of a defibrillator. First aid instructors organize course dates, compile teaching materials, and issue participation certificates. Areas and places of employment: First aid instructors are employed.

Full-time: 6-7 days.

Distribution of hours (example): Basic seminar in pedagogy: 24 teaching units. Advanced seminar on course-specific introduction to first aid: 16 teaching units. Final seminar/examination: 16 teaching units. Total: 56 teaching units.

Course fees are generally incurred for attending advanced training courses, and possibly examination fees for the examination. Further costs may arise, e.g., for work materials, travel to the training facility, or for external accommodation.

Necessity of widespread first aid training, pedagogy, methodology and didactics, media use and teaching forms.

In-depth knowledge in the following areas is a good prerequisite for successfully passing the advanced training examination: Pedagogy/Didactics: e.g., to convey teaching material in an appealing and memorable way. Medicine/Immediate Measures: e.g., to conduct expert teaching demonstrations.

The advanced training consists of theoretical and practical lessons. Depending on the education provider, one should be prepared for the following conditions: Lesson time: full-time lessons on at least four weekdays or as block instruction. Learning format: for in-person events: classroom instruction at the educational institution (possibly not at the place of residence); for combined learning forms (e.g., blended learning): in-person events in a classroom setting at the educational institution and self-directed learning via electronic learning platforms and systems from home.

Participation in advanced training is not remunerated.

The following advanced training alternatives are available for the profession of First Aid Instructor: In the field of Nursing: Specialist Nurse for Intensive Care and Anesthesia, Specialist Nurse for Intermediate Care, Specialist Nurse for Nephrology, Specialist Nurse in Operating Room and Endoscopy Services, Specialist Pediatric Nurse for Emergency Care, Specialist Nurse for Emergency Care. Commonality: caring for sick people, applying first aid and life-saving immediate measures. In the field of Education, School, Initial and Advanced Training: Teacher - Schools in Healthcare, Practical Instructor for Paramedics. Commonality: planning lessons, providing practical and theoretical instruction.

Qualification title: Recognized First Aid Instructor.

First Aid Instructor is a vocational advanced training. It is regulated according to the guidelines of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV). The full-time advanced training lasts 6-7 days.

After this advanced training, First Aid Instructors can find employment, for example, in organizations for free welfare and youth assistance or in rescue service organizations. Through adaptive advanced training (Anpassungsweiterbildung), one can keep their specialized knowledge current, update it, and expand it. The range of topics extends from first aid to adult education. With their advanced training qualification, First Aid Instructors can gain access to a university Studium (degree program) even without a school-based higher education entrance qualification and, for example, acquire a Bachelor's degree in the field of medical and rescue services. Taking the step into self-employment is also possible, for example, as a lecturer in the field of first responder training.

The advanced training is regulated according to the specifications of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV): Authorization of Institutions for First Aid Training and Further Training (DGUV-Grundsatz 304-001) in the version dated 01.04.2022 (DGUV).

A certificate of participation in a first aid course and a medical training are generally prerequisites for admission to the advanced training. In addition, a minimum age of 18 years may be required.
