What happens if you fail at Studienkolleg?
If you fail the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP), you can repeat it once. The detailed rules — when the resit takes place, repeating a semester, and what happens after a second failure — are set by the Studienkolleg and its federal state.
What is fixed
- Under the KMK framework, the Studienkolleg is designed for two semesters and ends with the FSP (German plus two subjects of the course).
- The FSP can be repeated once.
- There is no entitlement to a Studienkolleg place, so a new admission is never automatic.
What to ask your Studienkolleg
- When the resit is held and whether you have to retake classes
- How grades and attendance during the semester are assessed
- Whether any route remains open after a second failure
Residence permit
- Under § 16b AufenthG, a Studienkolleg is part of the study purpose once your acceptance is proven.
- There is no general rule on how a failure affects your permit; the Ausländerbehörde decides case by case. Contact it early.
After passing
Passing the FSP does not guarantee a university place — the university makes the admission decision.
