Does Studienkolleg have 2 semesters in a year?
Under the KMK framework, a Studienkolleg course is designed for two semesters — roughly one academic year. How often new students are taken in is not uniform: each Studienkolleg decides whether a course starts in the winter semester, the summer semester or both.
Duration
- The course is planned for two semesters.
- It ends with the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP): German plus two subjects of the course.
- If you fail the FSP, you can repeat it once, which extends your time.
Start dates
- Which courses (T, M, W, G, S or the Fachhochschule courses) open in which semester varies by Studienkolleg.
- It is not true that every Studienkolleg admits students twice a year. Check the application and start dates on the website of the Studienkolleg you want.
- You need German proof before admission, and there is no entitlement to a place.
Planning tip
- If you are comparing several Studienkollegs, note each one's start semester and application period separately.
- For residence purposes, a Studienkolleg counts as part of the study purpose once your acceptance is proven (§ 16b AufenthG).
