Are there Studienkolleg dorms, and what is the application process like?
Studienkolleg students can apply for dorms — they have the same rights as Universität students.
Dorm Types
1. Studentenwerk Dorm
- Official student dorm
- 300-450 €/month (depending on the city)
- Fully booked — early application is critical
- Monthly fee includes electricity+water+internet
- Generally a single room + shared bathroom+kitchen
2. WG (Wohngemeinschaft)
- Shared apartment for 2-5 people
- 350-700 €/month (per room)
- WG-Gesucht, ImmoScout, Facebook
- Easier if your German level is B2+
- A guarantor (Bürgschaft) is sometimes required
3. Privatzimmer (Private Room)
- Room with a family/landlord
- 250-500 €/month
- Cheapest option
- Focus on German speaking practice
Studentenwerk Dorm Application
- Find the Studentenwerk associated with your Studienkolleg (e.g., studierendenwerk-berlin.de)
- Fill out the online application form
- Upload your Studienkolleg acceptance letter + passport scan
- Select 3-5 dorms in order of preference
- There might be a 3-12 month waiting period
- Acceptance email when a spot opens up
WG Application
- Create an account on WG-Gesucht.de or ImmoScout24
- Create a profile: write who you are and what you do (German + English)
- Browse listings, write messages (German preferred)
- Interview (online or in-person) → WG-Casting
- If selected, contract + Kaution (2-3 months' rent)
Important Date
Start applying for dorms 3-6 months before your Studienkolleg begins. For WiSe Studienkolleg → April-May application.
Accommodation for Visa
Proof of accommodation is mandatory for your visa application:
| Document | Description |
|---|---|
| Dorm acceptance letter | Official dorm confirmation |
| WG contract | Signed rental agreement |
| Hotel/Airbnb reservation | For the first 1-2 months (temporary) |
| Landlord letter | "Staying with" declaration |
If you don't have a dorm yet at your visa appointment, temporary accommodation is sufficient — you can look for official dorms after you arrive.
"I Can't Find a WG" Concern
A common concern, but realistically:
- You will definitely find a place within 1-2 months in the city where your Studienkolleg is located
- First week hostel/Airbnb → search on-site during this period
- International student Facebook groups can help
Practical Tip
Have an additional 700-1500 € ready for the Kaution (deposit) when applying for a dorm. This is usually 2-3 months' rent, paid upon moving in.
