Question 2

What is the difference between TestDaF and DSH?

Accepted Answer

TestDaF and DSH are the two main exams accepted by German universities to prove your German language proficiency. They have significant differences in structure, format, and validity.

Scoring
TDN 3, TDN 4, TDN 5
DSH-1, DSH-2, DSH-3

#Acceptance Levels

TestDaF: TDN 4 in each section is standard for most admissions; medicine and law programs often require TDN 5. TestDaF is the Test of German as a Foreign Language, a standardized German language proficiency exam.
DSH: DSH-2 is the standard acceptance level; some programs might ask for DSH-3. DSH is the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang, or German Language Examination for University Admission.

#Which One Should You Choose?
Choose TestDaF if:

You're applying from Turkey.
You plan to apply to multiple universities.
You want a certificate that's valid indefinitely.
You prefer a clear format with plenty of preparation materials.

Choose DSH if:

You're already in Germany (e.g., attending a Studienkolleg or language course). A Studienkolleg is a preparatory college for international students whose secondary school leaving certificates are not recognized in Germany.
You have a specific target university in mind and plan to attend it.
You prefer an exam with more emphasis on written skills, where speaking isn't a separate, distinct section.

#Practical Approach
For most Turkish students, the practical path is: first take TestDaF in Turkey → get your acceptance letter → then travel to Germany. If your TestDaF score isn't sufficient, you can take the DSH at a Studienkolleg in Germany.
#Alternatives

Telc C1 Hochschule — Accepted as equivalent to DSH-2 by some universities (but not all).
Goethe C2 — A highly prestigious certificate, accepted by most universities.
ÖSD C1 — Originating from Austria, it has a lower acceptance rate in Germany.

Question 3

Can I apply for a Master's with a B2 certificate?

Accepted Answer

Varies by program — B2 is sufficient for some Master's programs, but C1 is the standard for most.
#Language Requirements by Program

Program type
Typical requirement

German-taught Master's (engineering, natural sciences)
C1 (TestDaF 4, DSH-2)

German-taught Master's (social sciences, law)
C1 (mandatory, sometimes C2)

English-taught Master's
English IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90 + B1 German (some Universitäten)

MBA, executive program
English + minimum A2 German (generally)

Art, music (Kunst, Musik)
B2 sufficient, plus portfolio/exam

Architecture, design programs
B2-C1 + portfolio

#Situations Where You Can Apply for a Master's with B2

English-taught Master's program (1000+ available) — B2/B1 German supportive
Conditional admission — the Universität says "achieve C1 after arrival"
After Studienkolleg M-Kurs — TestDaF B2 may be accepted instead of DSH
Art and applied programs — emphasis on practical skills

#Common Situations Where B2 is Not Enough

Medicine (different for PhD, clinical branches, of course)
Law Master's
German philology
Classic DAAD scholarship (generally requires C1)

#Strategies for "I have B2 but I want a Master's"

Focus on English-taught Master's programs — 1000+ programs in the DAAD database: https://www.daad.de/en/studying-in-germany/courses/all-degrees/
Focus on reaching C1 — you can prepare for TestDaF or DSH in 3-6 months
Get conditional admission, then quickly achieve C1 in Germany after arrival
Try Studienkolleg M-Kurs — 1 year, both language and academic preparation

#Practical Side Note
Even in English-taught Master's programs, German C1 is practically necessary for life in Germany, internships, and post-graduation jobs. Start with B2, and continue learning in parallel.

Question 4

What exams prove your C1 German level?

Accepted Answer

Short answer: You prove C1 German for university with an exam certificate. Under the joint framework regulation of the HRK and the KMK, TestDaF with at least TDN 4 in all four parts and DSH-2 count as proof for all programmes, and telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule is listed as an exempting certificate. Which certificate and which result are accepted is decided by the university and the programme.
#Certificates used for C1

Certificate
Place in the framework regulation
Note

TestDaF (TDN 4 in every part)
Proof for all programmes
A university can set a different level for a specific programme

DSH-2
Proof for all programmes
Offered by universities and recognised Studienkollegs in Germany; a DSH registered with the HRK is recognised by German universities

telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
Exempting certificate
Individual universities can have different rules

Goethe-Zertifikat C1
Not listed
Up to the university; RWTH Aachen accepts it, for example, while LMU München lists only Goethe C2

ÖSD Zertifikat C1
Not listed
Up to the university

At C2 level, Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS and ÖSD C2 are also listed as exempting certificates in the framework regulation.
#When do you hand it in?
Whether the certificate is due at application or only by enrolment depends on the programme. A course attendance certificate does not replace an exam result. Meeting the language requirement does not mean you meet the programme's other admission requirements.

Question 5

Can you apply for an English-taught master's in Germany with IELTS?

Accepted Answer

Yes — English-taught master's programmes usually ask for proof of English such as IELTS or TOEFL, but each programme decides which tests it accepts and what score it needs. There is no Germany-wide IELTS score.
#What to check

Which tests the programme accepts: IELTS, TOEFL or other proof.
The required overall score and any minimum sub-scores.
How old the certificate may be and how to submit it.
Whether the programme also asks for German — this varies too, and some programmes require none.

#Be careful with score tables
Field-based tables you see online ("engineering 6.5, law 7.0") are not rules. Two programmes in the same field can set different scores; only the programme's own requirement is binding.
#Language is not the only criterion
A test score alone does not get you admitted. The university also looks at how well your bachelor's fits, your grade and your documents, and it makes the final decision.
#Where to look
Use the "Language requirements" section on the programme's official page and the DAAD admission database. If in doubt, ask the university's international office.

Question 6

Are there any recommendations for online German teachers?

Accepted Answer

When you're looking for online German lessons, you've generally got three main options: marketplace platforms, institution-based courses, and independent teachers. Which one is right for you really depends on your budget and what you're trying to achieve.
#Marketplace Platforms (1:1 Tutors)

Platform
Hourly Rate
Pros
Cons

italki
8-30 €
Huge selection, trial lessons often 5-10 €
Quality can vary

Preply
10-30 €
Good availability filters
High commission for teachers (indirectly affects price/quality)

Lingoda
~12-15 €/group class
Structured, offers certificate programs
Not one-on-one

Cambly (DE)
15-25 €
Great for natural conversation
Very focused on native English speakers, fewer native German tutors

#Institution-Based Online Courses

Goethe Institut Online — Pricey (around 700-900 € for a group course) but offers certified, prestigious instruction.
DeutschAkademie — Offers free online lessons (based in Vienna, high quality), but doesn't provide certificates.
Lingoda Sprint — A 1-month, 30-lesson challenge where you can get a refund if you complete it successfully.
Babbel Live — Monthly subscription, group classes.

#Turkish-Speaking Tutors (with Turkish explanations)
On YouTube, you can find channels that teach German in Turkish:

Doğukan Çakır — Clear explanations, focuses on A1-B2 levels.
Almancaclub — Lots of practical content.
Hocam Hocam (Almanca) — Has a large following.

If you're looking for a tutor who can explain things in Turkish on italki or Preply, try filtering for 'Native German + Turkish speaker'.
#How to Choose

Just starting at A1-A2? → Try DeutschAkademie (free) plus an affordable italki tutor.
Mid-level B1-B2, preparing for an exam? → Lingoda combined with Goethe exam preparation courses.
Intensive C1 study, preparing for TestDaF? → Go for intensive Goethe online courses plus a 1:1 tutor. (TestDaF is a standardized German language test for non-native speakers who wish to study at German universities.)
Is speaking practice your main challenge? → An individual native tutor on italki is your best bet.

#Practical Tip

First, take trial lessons from 3 different platforms (they usually cost 5-10 €). Find the tutor who clicks with you best, then commit to 2-3 lessons per week. Sticking with one tutor really helps with consistency.

Question 8

What is the minimum score required for each section of the TestDaF?

Accepted Answer

The TestDaF certificate consists of 4 sections, and each section is scored as TDN 3, TDN 4, or TDN 5. The Universität requirement depends on how much is needed from each section.
#General Standard: TDN 4
For most Bachelor's and Master's programs, TDN 4 from all 4 sections is considered the standard.

Section
Meaning of TDN 4

Reading comprehension
50-70% correct

Listening comprehension
50-70% correct

Written expression
Structured, faulty but understandable essay

Oral expression
Fluent speech, sufficient terminology

#Program-Specific Requirements

Program
Requirement

Engineering (TU München, RWTH Aachen)
4 × TDN 4

Natural sciences
4 × TDN 4

Social sciences
4 × TDN 4, some 4 × TDN 5

Medicine
4 × TDN 5 (mandatory)

Law
4 × TDN 5

Literature, German Studies
4 × TDN 5

Art, design
4 × TDN 4, some 4 × TDN 3

#Making Up for Missing Scores
The good thing about TestDaF: you can retake only the missing section.
Example: You scored TDN 4 in 3 sections, but only TDN 3 in writing. Retake the exam and only take the writing test — the others remain valid.
Retakes are counted within the same exam period — meaning there are 6 dates you can take the exam throughout the year.
#If the Total Score is Insufficient

Some Universitäten accept mixed scores: accepted if the average of 4 sections is 4+
A mixed TestDaF + DSH combination is not accepted — choose one certificate
To make up for a missing section, 3-6 more months of study are required

#Practical Strategy

Take a TestDaF Übungstest — see your current level
Focus on your weakest section (writing is generally the weakest for international students)
Take a Goethe or Lingoda TestDaF prep course
Take simulation exams 3 months in advance

Question 9

Is it possible to apply for a language course visa with B1?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can apply for a language course visa (§16f) with B1 — but it's not enough on its own, there are other requirements.
#Language Course Visa Language Requirement

Minimum A1-A2 level is sufficient (you're going there to learn the language after all)
B1+ makes for a stronger application — it sends the message "I'm serious, I will continue"
Which certificate? Goethe, Telc, ÖSD — obtained within the last 2 years

#Advantages of Applying with B1

Intent appears serious — "they already know German, they want to continue"
Consulate is more likely to accept (especially in the strict period of 2024+)
When you arrive in Germany, you can start a B2/C1 course directly
After 6-12 months, TestDaF/DSH preparation is complete — you can move on to university applications

#B1 + Sperrkonto + Letter of Intent
Standard package:

B1 certificate
Proof of funds: the German missions in Türkiye require at least €1,091 per month for a language course that does not prepare for university; a Sperrkonto or a Verpflichtungserklärung (Merkblatt 44F, checked 15.10.2026)
Insurance
Intensive (18+ hours/week) 6 months+ course registration
Accredited language school (on the DSV list)
Logical motivation letter

#"Intention to study at university" Pitfalls
The consulate pays attention:

If you have a conditional university admission letter at the same time → "why not directly with §16b?"
If your motivation letter states "university afterwards" → §16b application is recommended
Insufficient funds → suspicion about financing

#Situations Where §16b is More Logical Than §16f
If your goal is a master's/bachelor's degree:

Obtain a conditional admission letter → apply for §16b (academic visa)
§16b is more easily accepted
§16b has a longer duration (1-2 years, extendable)
With §16b, you can attend DSH/TestDaF courses in Germany

#Practical Advice

If you have B1+, consider an academic path: either apply to a university (if admitted, use §16b), or apply to a Studienkolleg. §16f is often an unnecessary extra step.

Question 10

What is the fastest way to learn German?

Accepted Answer

Your goal of A1 → B2 in German is possible with intensive study in 6-12 months. For C1, 12-18 months. "Fastest" means daily time + quality resources.
#Realistic Time Estimate

Goal

A1 → B2: ~8-10 months
More flexible

#3. Learning by Living in Germany

Studienkolleg or intensive language course visa
Constant exposure to German → fastest practice
A1 → C1: ~12-15 months (fast to B2, careful to C1)

#4. Fully Intensive Summer Camp (3 months)

Goethe Intensive (~1200 €/3 weeks)
Advances one level

#Daily Practice Plan (Medium Pace)

Activity
Duration

Vocabulary memorization (Anki/Quizlet)
20 min

Grammar book (Hueber, Klett)
30 min

Tutor lesson (2-3 times weekly)
60 min

German series/podcast (Easy German)
45 min

Writing exercise (essay, letter)
30 min

Total
~3 hours/day

#Resource Recommendations

Books: "Studio d", "Schritte international", "Aspekte Neu"
Podcasts: Slow German, Easy German, Deutsch lernen
Series: Dark, Babylon Berlin, Tatort (intermediate level)
Apps: Anki, DeutschAkademie, DW Learn German (free)
Sites: DW Deutsch Lernen, Lingolia, Mein Deutschbuch

#Pitfalls That Slow You Down

Learning only with apps (lack of speaking practice)
English-German translation (learn directly from TR)
Only grammar (speaking/listening should progress in parallel)
Inconsistent study (1 day a week for 5 hours → worse than 45 minutes for 7 days)

Key principle: Consistent daily study > occasional intensive spurts.

Question 11

Is the Goethe B1 certificate accepted by the embassy?

Accepted Answer

Yes — The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is a valid language certificate accepted by the German consulate/embassy.
#Which Visa Type Accepts It?

Visa type
Is Goethe B1 sufficient?

Language course visa (§16f)
Sufficient, even a strong application

Studienkolleg visa
Sufficient (some Bundesländer require B2)

Academic visa §16b — conditional admission
Sufficient for the visa, additional requirements may apply for the Universität

Academic visa §16b — definite admission
Not sufficient, C1 is required

Starting Universität studies
No – B1 is not sufficient (DSH-2/TestDaF 4 required)

Family reunification visa (spouse)
Sufficient (A1 mandatory, B1 strong)

#Goethe B1 Features

Valid indefinitely (Goethe certificates are "lifelong")
4 modules: reading, listening, writing, speaking
60% passing score for each module
Can be taken module by module — you don't have to complete the entire exam at once
Fee: ~180 € (full set), ~50 € per module

#The "Failed Listening" Scenario
A common situation: you passed 3 modules, but failed listening (Hörverstehen).
Solution:

Retake only the listening module — fee ~50 €
The other 3 modules are valid for 2 years (Goethe partial certificate rule)
Upon passing again, a combined certificate is issued

The consulate requires all modules to be completed within 2 years — a partial certificate alone is not sufficient; only a full B1 certificate is accepted.

#Practical Advice

Before taking the exam, solve the simulation exams (free on the Goethe Institut website)
If you struggle with listening → listen to 30 min of podcasts daily (Slow German, Easy German)
Intensive simulation for the last 2 weeks before the exam

Question 12

Is an ÖSD certificate accepted for family reunification in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Yes, ÖSD is accepted. The German Federal Foreign Office's Visa Handbook lists ÖSD among the recognised examination providers in its chapter on proof of language skills, covering every level from A1 to C2.
If you apply from Turkey, one detail matters a great deal: the German missions in Turkey accept certificates from only two providers for family reunification:

Goethe-Institut — "Start Deutsch 1"
ÖSD — "Grundstufe Deutsch 1"

The mission's own page states it plainly: other providers in Turkey are not recognised by the visa sections of the German missions. This means a telc certificate is not accepted in Turkey, even though telc is recognised in Germany and in other countries. Knowing this before you book an exam can save you months.
The exam date usually must be no more than one year old. Check the information sheet of the mission handling your application for the exact rule.
If you sat the exam inside Germany (for example at an ÖSD centre in Cologne), the provider is still ÖSD, so recognition is unaffected.

Question 13

Which level of DSH is considered sufficient, DSH-2 or DSH-3?

Accepted Answer

DSH-2 is the standard admission — sufficient for the majority of German Universitäten. DSH-3 is only required for some programs.
#What Do DSH Levels Mean?

Level
Score
CEFR equivalent

DSH-1
57-66%

DSH-3

Art, design
DSH-1 sufficient (depending on the Universität)

#For Those Who Don't Have Time for the Universität Requirement Despite DSH-1 Being Insufficient
Some Universitäten accept DSH-1 + additional language course:

Enrollment with DSH-1
In-university German course in the first semester
Retake DSH-2 at the end of the 2nd semester
If you don't pass, enrollment is cancelled

Not every Universität offers this option — inquire before applying.
#Should You Aim for DSH-2 or DSH-3?
DSH-2 is sufficient for Bachelor's/Master's (engineering, natural sciences, most social sciences). Having DSH-3 as a backup is recommended if:

You are considering Law or Medicine
You are going to a high-prestige Universität (LMU, Heidelberg, TU München social sciences)
You are planning an academic career (for transitioning to a PhD)

#Why is DSH Not Available in Turkey?
DSH is a university-specific exam — it's not centralized like TestDaF. Each Universität organizes its own DSH. Therefore:

You cannot take the DSH from Turkey
Only at your target Universität's Studienkolleg or language course
First take TestDaF → go to the Universität → take DSH there if necessary

#TestDaF vs DSH Equivalence
Most Universitäten consider the two exams equivalent:

TestDaF
DSH

TDN 4 in all sections
DSH-2

TDN 5 in all sections
DSH-3

TDN 3 average
DSH-1

Question 14

Does family reunification require A1 or B1 German?

Accepted Answer

Spouse reunification requires A1 — what the law calls "basic knowledge of German" (§ 30 (1) sentence 1 no. 2 Residence Act). The same requirement applies to the spouse of a German citizen (§ 28 (1) sentence 5).
B1 is needed for something else:

A permanent settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis)
Naturalisation

B1 is not required for a family reunification visa. People frequently confuse the two and spend months preparing for an exam two levels above what they need.
If you already hold B1: a higher level normally covers A1. Even so, the missions' information sheets name specific exams ("Start Deutsch 1", "Grundstufe Deutsch 1"), so confirm with the mission handling your case before you apply — particularly if your certificate is more than a year old.

B2 (3-4 months)
Intensive period — in-person course + online support

C1 (4-6 months)
Intensive in-person + exam prep (like Goethe)

#Closing the Speaking Practice Gap
If you are studying primarily online:

Find an italki tandem partner — free, mutual language exchange
Discord Deutsch groups — continuous speaking
Meetup groups — Goethe Stammtisch evenings in Turkey
Germany summer school — DAAD Sommerkurse (3-4 weeks intensive)

#Practical Decision

Is budget the main criterion? Start with online + free resources, switch to in-person once you reach B1+.
Are time and discipline an issue? Take an in-person course, let the class structure solve the problem.

Question 16

What are the best places to prepare for the TestDaF exam in Turkey?

Accepted Answer

You can find TestDaF preparation courses in Turkey through 3 main types of sources: institutions, individual tutors, or self-study.
#Reputable Institutions
#1. Goethe-Institut (Turkey)

Located in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.
TestDaF prep courses typically cost around €600-900 for an 8-week program.
They offer certified teachers and original study materials.
As an official TestDaF exam center, their courses often include exam simulations, giving you a real feel for the test.

#2. Yunus Emre Enstitüsü

While they don't offer specific TestDaF preparation, they do provide C1 level German courses.
These courses are often free or very low-cost.
However, they lack the specific focus needed for TestDaF exam strategies and format.

#3. Private Language Schools

School
City
TestDaF Prep

Dilset
Istanbul, Ankara
Around 3000-5000 TL for 8 weeks

Inlingua
Istanbul, Ankara
Yes, they offer it.

Anadolu University (AKİS)
Eskişehir
Free online language courses (not specifically TestDaF)

Istanbul University / Yıldız Technical University
Istanbul
Occasionally open TestDaF prep courses.

#4. Online & Hybrid Options

Consider Lingoda's C1 courses combined with their TestDaF prep modules.
You can also use a hybrid approach: find an Italki or Preply tutor to supplement your Lingoda studies.
DeutschAkademie online offers free, self-paced German lessons, which can be a good foundation.

#Individual Tutors
To find TestDaF-specific tutors in Turkey, you have a few options:

italki.com: Use the "TestDaF" filter to find specialized tutors.
Sahibinden.com / Social Media: Look for local German tutors in Turkey.
Some Goethe-Institut teachers might offer individual lessons outside their official courses.
Graduates from university German language departments can also be good resources.

Average rates are around 150-400 TL per hour, depending on the tutor's experience.
#Self-Study (Free Options)
Here are some official TestDaF materials and free resources for self-preparation:

TestDaF Übungstest: These are official practice tests – look for sets with 5 full exams on the TestDaF website.

Question 18

Is there a difference between Goethe vs Telc certificates for university applications?

Accepted Answer

Short answer: For a university application, what matters is not the exam brand but the type and level of the certificate. The joint framework regulation of the HRK and the KMK lists telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule and Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS as exempting certificates. Goethe-Zertifikat C1 and the general telc Deutsch C1 are not on that list; whether they are accepted depends on the university and the programme.
#How Goethe and telc differ for your application

Certificate
In the framework regulation
What to check for your programme

telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule
Exempting certificate
Whether it is on the programme's list of accepted certificates

telc Deutsch C1 (general)
Not listed
Whether the university accepts it separately

Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS
Exempting certificate
The programme's rule if you hold an older Goethe diploma

Goethe-Zertifikat C1
Not listed
Up to the university; RWTH Aachen accepts it, for example, while LMU München lists only Goethe C2

telc offers two C1 exams: telc Deutsch C1 is for general purposes, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule is designed for university entrance. Check on the programme page which one it accepts for applications.
#At application or at enrolment?
Whether the certificate is due at application or only by enrolment depends on the programme. Meeting the language requirement does not mean you meet the programme's other admission requirements.
Before you book an exam, check the list of certificates your target university accepts. Details and official sources: German level and language certificates for university

Question 19

Do you recommend an online one-on-one tutor for B2?

Accepted Answer

Yes, an online 1:1 tutor at B2 level can be very effective — especially for speaking and writing practice.
#Why is a 1:1 Tutor Effective at B2?
The B2 level is where self-study becomes challenging. Group classes are insufficient because:

Your speaking time is limited
Error correction is delayed and superficial
Your specific weak points are not addressed

A 1:1 tutor:

Matches your pace exactly
Provides instant error correction
Creates a customized curriculum for you
Allows for exam-focused preparation

#Platform Selection

Platform
B2 tutor hourly
Advantage

italki
12-25 €
Widest selection, trial lesson 5-10 €

Preply
15-30 €
Good availability filtering

Lingoda Private
~25 €/hour
Standard curriculum, certificate

Goethe Institut Bireysel
60-90 €
Highest quality but expensive

#How to Find a "Good Tutor"?

Native German speaker (Muttersprachler)
Lives or has lived in Germany
Familiar with B2-C1 exams (TestDaF, telc, Goethe)
Academic background (university graduate, certified teacher)
Understanding Turkish is a bonus (can explain weak points in Turkish)

When looking at profiles, pay attention to:

Very low price (quality might be low)
Only "Conversation practice" in the description (no structured teaching)
No reviews (new tutor, risk)

#Recommended Plan (B2 → C1)
2-3 lessons per week, 45-60 min:

Day
Content

Monday
Writing exercise + correction

Wednesday
Speaking practice (free + structured)

Saturday
Grammar review + exam format

Self-study between lessons (approx. 5-6 hours per week):

Anki vocabulary
German series/podcast
Writing exercise (essay)

B2 → C1 is possible within 3-4 months.
#"Only Speaking" Practice is Insufficient
Focusing only on speaking at B2 is a weak strategy. Because:

If there's speaking practice but no error correction/structuring, fossilized errors will set in
Writing practice is essential (writing is critical in exams)
Grammar deepens at B2 (Konjunktiv II, Passiv, etc.)

#Turkish-Speaking Native German Tutors
Use filters on italki/Preply:

"Native German" + "Speaks Turkish"
Turkish tutors living in Germany — native language Turkish but C2 German

The second group can be very helpful at an intermediate level — they can explain weak points in Turkish.
#Budget Plan

Level
Monthly cost

1 lesson/week
~80-120 €

2 lessons/week
~150-220 €

3 lessons/week
~230-330 €

Recommended (B2→C1 fast): 2-3 lessons/week
200-300 €/month × 4 months

This investment is higher compared to a cheap course, but the speed is 2-3 times faster.

Question 20

With a conditional admission, does my language school have to be in the same city as the university?

Accepted Answer

Usually not. With a conditional admission, what matters is that you reach the language level the university requires. Where you attend the language course is generally less important.
Points to check

Your conditional admission letter: it states the required level and any conditions. Read it carefully, because what it says applies to your case.
Recommended schools or courses: some universities recommend specific language schools or courses. A recommendation is not automatically a requirement, but check whether the letter makes it one.
Proof of the level: make sure the certificate you will earn is accepted by your university.

Caveat: individual universities can set their own conditions. If the letter is unclear, ask the university's international office before you book a course.
For the visa side of conditional admission, see our guide on conditional admission visas and the required language level.

Question 21

What are the best ways for beginners to learn German?

Accepted Answer

If you're just starting to learn German, effective methods include taking language courses (like those at the Goethe-Institut or private schools), using language learning apps (such as Duolingo or Babbel), finding a tandem partner for practice, and integrating the language into your daily life. Regular repetition and immersing yourself in a German-speaking environment are crucial for progress.

Question 22

Is it possible to reach B2 German proficiency from a beginner level in 12 months?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is absolutely possible to reach B2 German proficiency from a beginner level within 12 months if you commit to an intensive and consistent study schedule. Dedicating several hours a day to lessons, practice, and immersing yourself in the language environment will significantly speed up this process. Keep in mind, though, that your personal learning pace and motivation also play a big role.

Question 23

Is it possible to live in Germany with English only?

Accepted Answer

For an English-taught degree in a large city: yes, you can get by for a while. For everything around the degree: only partly.
Where English usually works:

University (international offices, English-taught programmes, many student jobs in IT or research).
Big-city daily life: shops, cafés, public transport apps, international student housing.

Where German is usually needed:

Public offices: Bürgeramt (Anmeldung), Ausländerbehörde (residence permit), tax office. Forms and letters are in German and staff are not required to speak English.
Housing: most landlords, rental contracts and house rules are in German.
Health care: many doctors speak some English, but receptionists, pharmacies and hospital paperwork are mostly German.
Contracts (phone, internet, insurance, gym): German, with German cancellation rules.
Part-time jobs outside IT/academia and most internships.

Realistic plan: start with A2–B1 German before or during your first year. It makes offices, housing and jobs much easier and is required anyway for many residence-permit options after graduation.

Question 24

How can I find affordable German language courses in Germany?

Accepted Answer

For affordable German language courses in Germany, the Volkshochschule (community adult education centers) are one of the most common and accessible options. You can find the courses nearest to you by searching for 'Volkshochschule Deutsch als Fremdsprache' along with the name of your city. These courses are often affordable for working individuals and, in certain situations, can even be free with government support.

Question 25

Can I enrol at a university with a conditional admission before reaching the required language level (e.g. C1)?

Accepted Answer

Usually not: final enrolment depends on meeting the condition set by your university. What decides this is not a universal "C1 rule", but the admission and enrolment rules of your university and programme.
#What to check

What is your condition? Your conditional admission letter states which document and which level are required. For German-taught programmes this is most often a DSH or TestDaF result; the required level varies by university and programme.
A conditional admission is not a guarantee. Until you meet the condition, final enrolment (Immatrikulation) is not secured.
During a preparatory course: some universities have their own rules for applicants in their preparatory language courses. The university decides what status you have while attending.

#Warnings from the missions' information sheet

The language exam can be retaken only once.
After you meet the language requirement, your earlier conditional admission may not simply continue; you may have to apply again.

#What to do
Read the condition and deadline in your admission letter, and ask the university's student office (Studierendensekretariat) in writing exactly which document is needed for enrolment and by when.

Question 26

What can I do to improve my German and adapt to the culture in Germany?

Accepted Answer

The most effective way to improve your German language skills and adapt to the culture in Germany is to actively engage with the local community. You can expand your social circle by joining sports clubs, associations, or participating in volunteer activities. Don't hesitate to speak, don't be afraid to make mistakes, and ask people to correct you. Practicing and actively using the language in daily life will speed up your learning process significantly.

Question 27

Are DSH exam results accepted by all universities in Germany?

Accepted Answer

DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) exam results are generally accepted by universities across Germany. However, some universities might have exceptional cases, such as preferring their own DSH exam or results obtained from specific DSH centers. It's always best to directly check the admission requirements and language certificate needs of the university you plan to apply to.

Question 28

How do international students prepare for a bachelor's degree in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Start by finding out whether your school-leaving certificate gives you direct access or a Studienkolleg route in Germany; then plan the language proof and the application channel for each programme. The university always makes the final decision.
#1. Check your entrance qualification (HZB)
A Turkish school certificate on its own is not decisive; anabin assesses it together with the YKS result and placement.

12-year general Lise + a score above 180 (SAY, SÖZ, EA or DİL) + placement in a Lisans programme of at least 4 years at a faculty → direct, subject-restricted access, no Studienkolleg.
Meslek Lisesi + above 180 → subject-oriented Studienkolleg.
According to the DAAD admission database, a Lise graduate without the YKS, or with only a TYT result, cannot be admitted.

#2. Choose the language proof per programme
Language and level depend on the programme. German-taught courses often ask for DSH or TestDaF; for English-taught courses the programme sets the proof, such as IELTS or TOEFL. There is no universal B2 or C1 rule. A Studienkolleg also requires German proof before admission.
#3. Find the application channel
Not every university uses uni-assist. Where it does, the application is fully digital; fees are €75 for the first course and €30 for each additional course in the same semester. The uni-assist deadline is the university's deadline.
#4. Know your grade
uni-assist converts your foreign grade using the modified Bavarian formula.

Question 29

How common is English spoken in Germany?

Accepted Answer

English is pretty common in Germany, especially in major cities like Berlin and within university environments. However, for everyday bureaucratic tasks and in professional life, knowing German is incredibly important for your integration and career opportunities.

Question 30

Do I need to state the reason for taking the Goethe A1 exam, like family reunification, when I apply?

Accepted Answer

When applying for the Goethe A1 exam, stating the reason for taking it (for example, family reunification) is important for the relevant institutions to correctly evaluate your exam result. It's generally recommended to provide this information accurately and completely. For the most precise guidance, you should always check the official guidelines from the Goethe-Institut (Germany's cultural institute).

Question 31

Do I have to enrol in a language course if I get a conditional admission?

Accepted Answer

If your condition is a German language level, then for the visa the practical answer is yes: for a study-preparatory language course file (currently information sheet 36F at the German missions in Türkiye), the mission asks for a language course registration or a confirmation from the language school or university. But two things need to be kept apart:
#1. The university's condition
Your conditional admission letter states the condition. The binding threshold is usually the university's own language exam before your studies start (most often DSH or TestDaF). Where and in which format you take the course depends on that condition and on the university; not every university runs its own German courses, and some courses are charged for.
#2. The visa side
A study-preparatory language course is part of the study purpose if your admission is bound to it (§ 16b AufenthG). The mission wants to see the course registration or confirmation in your file; there is no official rule imposing the same course format or certificate level on everyone — the current checklist is on the mission's website.
#What to do

Read the condition in your admission letter and ask the university in writing about its courses (offered? fees? places?).
Add the course registration or confirmation to your visa file.
Check your mission's current information sheet.

Question 32

How important is German language proficiency for finding a job in Germany with an international bachelor's degree?

Accepted Answer

To find a job in Germany with an international bachelor's degree, you'll generally need German language proficiency at a B2 or C1 level. While academic positions or some international companies might offer English-speaking work environments, German language skills significantly boost your competitiveness in the general job market.

Question 33

How important is German when renting a flat in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Quite important. Most of the steps involved in renting a flat in Germany, such as listings, communication with landlords, viewings, the rental contract and related paperwork, usually take place in German.
Why it matters

You understand listings and the rental contract better and can spot important terms.
Communicating with landlords and property managers is easier, which can help your application.
Handling the process only in English can be quite difficult, although it is not always impossible.

Our recommendation
If you can, reach a good level of German before you arrive. It makes searching for and renting a flat considerably easier. If your German is still limited, ask a German-speaking friend to help you read the contract before you sign it.
Caveat: a rental contract is legally binding. Do not sign anything you do not fully understand.

Question 34

Does the difficulty of German language exams vary from city to city?

Accepted Answer

For the standardised exams, no. For the university-run DSH, partly.

TestDaF is developed and graded centrally by the TestDaF-Institut; the paper is the same on each exam date regardless of the test centre, in Germany or abroad.
Goethe-Zertifikat and telc exams are standardised too: the same format and assessment criteria everywhere, with central or centrally trained examiners.
DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) is different: each university sets and runs its own DSH within a common framework agreed by the universities (HRK) and the education ministers (KMK). Format, topics and strictness therefore differ between universities, and candidates do report that some DSH exams feel harder than others. A passed DSH is nevertheless recognised nationwide.

What really changes from place to place is access: waiting times for TestDaF dates, how often a university offers the DSH, and whether a DSH is open to external candidates.
If you want the most predictable route, take TestDaF or a Goethe C1/C2 exam; if you take the DSH, practise with the sample exams of the specific university.

Question 35

Is it possible to live or work in Germany without knowing German?

Accepted Answer

Living or working in Germany without knowing German can be challenging, especially in daily life and in many professional fields. While you might find some English-speaking job opportunities, learning German gives you a huge advantage for understanding legal regulations and truly integrating into social life. It makes navigating bureaucracy much easier and opens up more job prospects.

Question 36

Is a TELC A2 certificate accepted for visa applications?

Accepted Answer

For language proficiency in German visa applications, results from specific institutions like Goethe-Institut, TELC, TestDaF, and DSH are generally accepted. A TELC A2 certificate is typically an accepted document. However, the accepted exams and required levels can vary depending on your visa type and the institution you're applying to. For the most current and accurate information, it's always best to check the official website of the German Consulate or the relevant institution. If you need to appeal TELC exam results, you can use the appeal form directly on TELC's official website.

Question 37

Do you need to learn German to move to Germany?

Accepted Answer

Learning German is largely essential for living in Germany; it gives you a significant advantage in daily life, when dealing with bureaucracy, and for finding a job. While German might not be a strict requirement initially for some English-taught programs at the master's level or in international work environments, a certain language proficiency is expected for long-term integration and many types of residence permits. Always verify the required language level based on the specific program you're applying to and the type of visa you'll need.

Question 38

Can I take my language course in a different state after getting accepted to a Studienkolleg?

Accepted Answer

Not automatically: after a Studienkolleg acceptance, going to any language school in another Land is not covered by the purpose of your residence permit by default. The permit is valid throughout Germany but tied to its purpose, so check with the Ausländerbehörde (or the German mission if you are still at the visa stage) before you change anything.
#What the law says (§ 16b AufenthG)

The study purpose includes preparatory measures: a Studienkolleg, provided your acceptance is proven.
A preparatory language course counts only if you have been admitted to full-time study and that admission is conditional on the course.
The law does not tie a Studienkolleg to a particular Land, but a language school unrelated to your admission does not fall under this.

#Residence permit
A residence title is issued for the whole federal territory, yet it can carry conditions (Auflagen). If a requirement essential to it lapses, its validity can be shortened.
#Switching Studienkolleg
According to the KMK, moving from one Studienkolleg to another is as a rule not possible. A passed Feststellungsprüfung, on the other hand, is recognised by the Länder mutually. An FSP from an FH-Studienkolleg does not open access to universities.

Question 39

How do you appeal the results of a language exam in Germany?

Accepted Answer

It's generally possible to appeal the results of language exams taken in Germany (e.g., telc, TestDaF, Goethe). The appeal process varies depending on the institution that administered the exam. Typically, you need to submit a written appeal within a specific timeframe after the results are announced, often following the procedure outlined on the official website of the exam center or institution. Always verify the valid timeframe and exact procedure with the official exam provider.

Question 40

What are effective ways to learn German while studying in English in Germany?

Accepted Answer

The most effective way to learn German while studying in English in Germany is to integrate the language into your daily life as much as possible. Watch German movies, set your phone to German, speak German at the bakery, find German roommates, or join a German sports club. Vocabulary, grammar, and plenty of practice form the foundation of language learning.

Question 41

What are effective ways to become fluent in German?

Accepted Answer

The most effective way to become fluent in German is through consistent practice. Make it a habit to speak German to yourself, try to formulate your thoughts in German, and actively look up any words you don't know. Joining dedicated language learning forums and communities can also be incredibly helpful for finding practice partners and getting exposure to native speakers.

Question 42

How can you speed up learning German in Germany?

Accepted Answer

To really get your German skills up to speed, consider investing in intensive courses or one-on-one tutoring. Daily practice is crucial, and joining language communities can make a huge difference. You can also find extra resources on platforms like r/german.

Question 43

What German language level do I need for conditional admission?

Accepted Answer

If you receive conditional admission, universities usually require you to prove C1 level German language proficiency before you can start your studies. However, this requirement can differ based on the specific university and program. You absolutely need to carefully review the exact language requirements stated in your admission letter and plan your language course accordingly.

Question 44

What's the best way to improve your German language skills and adapt to German culture?

Accepted Answer

To really boost your German language skills and integrate culturally, get involved in local communities. Join clubs or volunteer. These are super effective ways to meet people and practice. Don't be shy about striking up conversations, and definitely ask people to correct your mistakes. Hands-on practice is truly the best way to learn both the language and the culture.

Question 45

How long does it take to learn German from B1 to C1 level?

Accepted Answer

Reaching C1 German from a B1 level really depends on your effort, how often you study, and the intensity of your language courses. With consistent and intensive study, you could get there in 1-2 years. However, it's also realistic to expect it to take up to 3 years.

Question 46

Is learning German mandatory to live or work in Germany?

Accepted Answer

If you plan to live, work, or study in Germany long-term, learning German is definitely recommended and often essential. Knowing German provides a huge advantage for integrating into daily life, handling bureaucratic processes, and finding a job.
