What exams prove your C1 German level?
Short answer: You prove C1 German for university with an exam certificate. Under the joint framework regulation of the HRK and the KMK, TestDaF with at least TDN 4 in all four parts and DSH-2 count as proof for all programmes, and telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule is listed as an exempting certificate. Which certificate and which result are accepted is decided by the university and the programme.
Certificates used for C1
| Certificate | Place in the framework regulation | Note |
|---|---|---|
| TestDaF (TDN 4 in every part) | Proof for all programmes | A university can set a different level for a specific programme |
| DSH-2 | Proof for all programmes | Offered by universities and recognised Studienkollegs in Germany; a DSH registered with the HRK is recognised by German universities |
| telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule | Exempting certificate | Individual universities can have different rules |
| Goethe-Zertifikat C1 | Not listed | Up to the university; RWTH Aachen accepts it, for example, while LMU München lists only Goethe C2 |
| ÖSD Zertifikat C1 | Not listed | Up to the university |
At C2 level, Goethe-Zertifikat C2: GDS and ÖSD C2 are also listed as exempting certificates in the framework regulation.
When do you hand it in?
Whether the certificate is due at application or only by enrolment depends on the programme. A course attendance certificate does not replace an exam result. Meeting the language requirement does not mean you meet the programme's other admission requirements.
