Can you apply for an English-taught master's in Germany with IELTS?
Yes — English-taught master's programmes usually ask for proof of English such as IELTS or TOEFL, but each programme decides which tests it accepts and what score it needs. There is no Germany-wide IELTS score.
What to check
- Which tests the programme accepts: IELTS, TOEFL or other proof.
- The required overall score and any minimum sub-scores.
- How old the certificate may be and how to submit it.
- Whether the programme also asks for German — this varies too, and some programmes require none.
Be careful with score tables
Field-based tables you see online ("engineering 6.5, law 7.0") are not rules. Two programmes in the same field can set different scores; only the programme's own requirement is binding.
Language is not the only criterion
A test score alone does not get you admitted. The university also looks at how well your bachelor's fits, your grade and your documents, and it makes the final decision.
Where to look
Use the "Language requirements" section on the programme's official page and the DAAD admission database. If in doubt, ask the university's international office.
