I have a WG contract, is that enough for Anmeldung?

✓ Answered · 3 min read · 138 views

No, a WG contract (Mietvertrag) alone is not sufficient for Anmeldung. A Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord's confirmation document) is required separately.

Difference Between WG Contract and Anmeldung

Mietvertrag (WG Contract)

  • Before December 2024: Could have been sufficient for Anmeldung
  • After: Not sufficient — a separate Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is needed

Wohnungsgeberbestätigung

  • Landlord's signed confirmation document
  • It states "This person is moving to this address / lives here from this date"
  • Different from a Mietvertrag — shorter, focused only on address notification

Who Provides the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung in WG Scenarios?

Scenario 1: If You Are Not the Hauptmieter (Main Tenant)

  • The Hauptmieter provides you with the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
  • The Hauptmieter must have obtained sublet permission from the landlord (legal requirement)
  • The Hauptmieter signs the form, and you take it to the Anmeldung

Scenario 2: You Are the Hauptmieter

  • The landlord signs it for you
  • The person who directly signed the rental contract
  • Practically rare for students (most WGs are sublets)

Scenario 3: You and Your WG Flatmates Are Hauptmieter (Mitmieter) Simultaneously

  • The landlord provides a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung to all Mitmieter
  • A separate document for each individual

Wohnungsgeberbestätigung Format

Required Content

  • Landlord's name + address
  • Your name
  • Address (street + number + floor + postal code + city)
  • Move-in date (Einzug)
  • Signature + date
  • (In some cities) Phone number — for official verification

Standard Form

  • Berlin: service.berlin.de → "Einzugsbestätigung des Wohnungsgebers"
  • Other cities have similar forms
  • The landlord can also use their own format (provided it contains sufficient information)

Common Problems in WGs

Problem 1: Hauptmieter Does Not Provide Wohnungsgeberbestätigung

  • Some Hauptmieter engage in unregistered subletting (not legal)
  • Solution: Ask the landlord directly (by phone)
  • If the landlord does not approve → look for another WG, you cannot extend your visa without Anmeldung

Problem 2: WG Listing Is Not Legal

  • Some WG listings state "Anmeldung not possible"
  • This means prohibited or unregistered subletting
  • Never stay in such a place — it's a visa risk

Problem 3: Landlord is in Turkey / Abroad

  • If the landlord cannot sign → a caretaker/property management (Hausverwaltung) can sign
  • Or an online signature (eIDAS is legally accepted)

Problem 4: Document Is Too Old

  • It must be from a maximum of 2 weeks prior (the Bürgeramt checks this)
  • The official may not accept an older document

When Is a Mietvertrag Sufficient?

Old Regulation (Before December 2024)

  • In some cities, a Mietvertrag was considered sufficient
  • This rule has been abolished

Exceptional Cases

  • In some small cities, officials accept a Mietvertrag + additional permission
  • Not a standard rule

Important

  • Anmeldung cannot be done without a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung — this is proven
  • A WG contract only shows the tenant-landlord relationship, it is not sufficient for address notification
  • When first looking for a WG, always ask if the landlord/Hauptmieter allows Anmeldung

WG Change After Anmeldung

Deregistering from the Old WG

  • Ummeldung (change of registration) → Wohnungsgeberbestätigung for the new address
  • Go to the Bürgeramt again, report the old address + new address

Changing Address in All WGs After Anmeldung (Aufgabe)

  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from the new WG
  • Bürgeramt appointment (again, 4-12 weeks waiting time)
  • The old registration closes automatically
