FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg: A Deep-Rooted Educational Tradition in Germany
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, founded in Erlangen in 1743, is one of Germany's oldest and most respected universities. With centuries of academic heritage, it is now the third-largest university in Bavaria and among the top 15 largest universities in Germany. The university's academic strength is evident across a wide range of disciplines housed within its five main faculties: Law and Economics, Medicine, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Engineering. FAU is renowned for its internationally recognized research, especially in engineering and natural sciences, while also offering strong programs in humanities and medicine.
One of FAU's most distinctive features is its multi-campus structure, spread across the cities of Erlangen, Nürnberg, and Fürth. While the Erlangen campus reflects a more traditional university atmosphere, the Nürnberg campuses primarily host programs in economics, educational sciences, and some engineering fields. This distribution allows students to experience the diverse living and learning environments offered by different cities. The university aims to prepare its students for future challenges through innovative teaching methods, interdisciplinary approaches, and robust research infrastructure. For Turkish students considering higher education in Germany, FAU's diversity and quality mean you can find a suitable program and living environment.
Student Life in Nürnberg and Erlangen: The Dynamism of Two Cities
Studying at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg isn't just about academic success; it's also about experiencing a rich student life in two significant Bavarian cities. While Erlangen largely maintains a university town identity, Nürnberg stands out with its cultural events, historical charm, and vibrant social scene. You can benefit from the advantages both cities offer.
Erlangen: A calm, green, and bike-friendly city, Erlangen hosts many parks, cafes, and cultural venues where you can enjoy your time outside of classes. Although university buildings are spread throughout the city, inter-campus travel is quite easy. Areas like the Schlossgarten, in particular, become popular meeting spots for students during spring and summer.
Nürnberg: As Bavaria's second-largest city, Nürnberg offers a completely different atmosphere with its medieval castle, historic city center, and modern shopping opportunities. Numerous museums, theaters, concert halls, and bars cater to students' social and cultural needs. Student dormitories and shared apartment (WG - Wohngemeinschaft) options in the city aim to meet your accommodation needs. Questions like 'Is anyone living in a WG in Nürnberg?', frequently asked in our Telegram groups, show that Turkish students are particularly looking for shared housing. Inter-city transportation is very convenient via public transport, and students typically use a Semesterticket (semester ticket) to take advantage of these options.
Both cities offer an open and welcoming environment for international students. Through student clubs, sports activities, and cultural communities, you'll find it much easier to make new friends and adapt to your life in Germany. This dynamic environment will significantly contribute to your personal development alongside your academic career.
