Frequently Asked Questions

I received master's admission from Bielefeld University, but I will start an affiliated language school first. What steps should I take for my visa application? ▼

If you've received a conditional admission (conditional on a language course) from Fachhochschule Bielefeld, you'll need to submit both your language course registration and your university admission letter for your visa application. Your visa type could be a 'language course and university preparation visa' or directly a 'student visa'. You should check the German Consulate's current list of visa application documents and also include documents showing that your language course is affiliated with the university. Generally, in this situation, you can obtain a visa valid for the duration of your language course and then switch to a student visa within Germany once you meet the language proficiency requirements.

Can anyone provide information about **accommodation/dormitories for Bielefeld University**? ▼

The most common options for accommodation in Bielefeld are student dormitories operated by Studierendenwerk Bielefeld (Student Services Organization) and private WG (Wohngemeinschaft), which are shared student apartments. Dorms are generally more affordable, but it's important to apply early as spots are limited. You can find private shared apartments on platforms like WG-Gesucht.de or through local student groups. The university's international office can also provide support with accommodation.

I'm looking for a **rental apartment in Bielefeld**. Can you share any if you know of one? ▼

As AlmanyaUni, we cannot directly share information about rental apartments. However, we can suggest some platforms for your apartment search in Bielefeld: WG-Gesucht.de, ImmobilienScout24.de, eBay Kleinanzeigen, and Facebook groups like 'Wohnung in Bielefeld' or 'WG Bielefeld' can be helpful. Also, don't forget to check the university's bulletin boards and the Studierendenwerk's accommodation services.

Is Fachhochschule Bielefeld a **Uni-Assist** member? ▼

No, Fachhochschule Bielefeld (HSBI) is not a Uni-Assist member. This means you'll need to submit your applications directly through the university's own application portal or international office. It's crucial to carefully review the international students section on HSBI's official website for the application process and required documents.

What are the main differences between a Fachhochschule and a regular university (Universität)? ▼

A Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) offers an education that focuses more on practical and vocational applications. Course content is typically enriched with industrial projects, internships, and laboratory work. Graduates usually possess qualifications directly relevant to the job market. A Universität (University), on the other hand, focuses more on theoretical knowledge, research, and academic careers. Both institutions award bachelor's and master's degrees, but doctoral (PhD) programs are generally found at universities (though some Fachhochschulen may offer PhD opportunities through collaborations).
