About the Program

This seminar "The Art of Writing" understands writing (and speaking) about one's own artistic work as an essential component of artistic practice, self-reflection, and communication. It offers a space where students can reflect on, discuss, and practice their writing through their own and others' texts. By critically reading and analyzing examples such as artist statements, exhibition texts, catalog texts, and reviews, as well as through practical writing exercises, they learn to translate their artistic work into text. The seminar addresses the challenges of writing about one's own art and facilitates an exchange about previous experiences and expectations. Linguistic and content structures are explored through joint text analyses. An excursion to Hamburg offers the opportunity to visit galleries or exhibitions together and engage in conversations with gallery owners or curators. Various writing workshops with structured exercises, free writing, and partner interviews promote writing flow and enable individual and collective reflection. The aim of the seminar is to foster the development of a personal artistic voice in writing. Students gain confidence in dealing with various text forms related to art practice and prepare for professional writing requirements such as artist statements, work texts, or funding applications. The seminar will take place in group and individual sessions.
