Ur- und FrühgeschichtePrehistory and Early History

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Prehistoric and Early Historic Archaeology as a subfield of ancient studies deals with the remains of cultures that were entirely or predominantly without written records. With a focus on the North German region and the archaeology of the Baltic Sea area, as well as an early historical emphasis in research and teaching, the department sets clear accents, with settlement and landscape archaeological aspects at the forefront. The study involves both field/underwater excavations and subsequent analysis of archaeological materials. The program includes lectures, seminars, exercises, excursions, and internships. Interdisciplinary work is particularly important in prehistoric and early historic archaeology. Graduates can work as archaeologists (usually with further qualification - M.A.) in teaching and research at universities, research institutes, museums, in monument preservation, or in excavation companies. Extended career fields include media, publishing, cultural management, education, or tourism.
