About the Program

The Master's program 'Theorie des Sozialen' (Theory of the Social) responds to the growing need to examine current key social issues with interdisciplinary scientific approaches. The aim of the study is to gain an integrative understanding of phenomena that are central to the social life form of human persons, combining sociology and philosophy. The relevant phenomena include empathy, shared and collective intentionality, social norms, informal and formal institutions and social roles, the global dimensions of interaction of today's individuals, and transnational institutional actors. These phenomena are treated both from structural and explanatory perspectives and analyzed in their normative significance. The program enables students to understand and assess the complex social phenomena of today's world, providing them with fundamental analytical and normative competencies that are urgently needed in our increasingly complex social world.
