Theoretical and Comparative Linguistics

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The general object of the theoretical and comparative linguistics study program is human speech competence, especially its grammar and interfaces. Starting with the basics of linguistics, special attention is paid to the relationship of form and meaning in linguistic utterances. Against this background, you will examine what the variety of natural languages have in common and what differentiates them. This lets us address the question of how general human linguistic ability relates to individual linguistic competence. This is a research oriented study program and closely tied with research conducted at the Institute of Linguistics.
