About the Program

The Gymnasium teacher education programme prepares students to teach at the Gymnasium, one of three types of secondary schools in Germany. Students will accompany pupils from 5th to 13th year (late childhood to early adulthood). The programme focuses on in-depth expertise in two teaching subjects, along with training in pedagogy, psychology and subject didactics (subject-specific teaching methods). Students complete practice teaching sessions at schools for practical classroom experience. The curriculum includes two teaching subjects (92 ECTS credits each), associated subject didactics (12 ECTS credits each), educational science modules (34 ECTS credits), practice teaching and internships (11 ECTS credits), a dissertation (10 ECTS credits), and modules from the free area (6 ECTS credits). After graduating, students complete a two-year practical teaching phase before sitting the Second State Examination to become fully qualified teachers.
