Systematische Musikwissenschaft [Systematic and Comparative Musicology]Systematic and Comparative Musicology

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

Systematic Musicology focuses on the physical, biological, psychological, cultural, and social foundations of music, its forms of existence, and effects. It uses empirical-experimental methods to investigate how physically measurable sound processes (acoustics) are received by the ear, processed neurally, and become objects of perception (psychoacoustics, music psychology). This extends to the study of reception and aesthetic evaluation (experimental reception research, music aesthetics) considering social and cultural contexts (music sociology, ethnomusicology/comparative musicology). Systematic Musicology also deals with contemporary forms of pop music, its mediation through technical media, and the conditions of its production and reception. The sub-areas of music theory, music philosophy, and organology connect Systematic with Historical Musicology. The program imparts knowledge and skills that enable students to work scientifically independently across the entire spectrum of the subject. Students can focus on either scientific and music-theoretical aspects or social and cultural aspects within their studies.
