Synthetic BiologySynthetic Biology MSc

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

Synthetic biology uses an engineering approach to endow biological cells with new molecular functions. The English-taught master's degree program of Synthetic Biology incorporates current findings in molecular biology as well as engineering and materials science. It is the first degree program that directly address the interdisciplinary approach of synthetic biology and optimally prepares students for this exciting new research and professional field. There is an emphasis on laboratory-based work using a wide range of modern methodologies and techniques. Students will develop an understanding of mathematical modelling of biological systems and the application of engineering principles to solve biological problems. The program focuses on practical experience and research, enabling students to transfer theoretical knowledge into practice and develop their own projects. This project work is completed with training in intercultural and scientific communication. The Master's degree programme prepares graduates for careers in industry or in university-external research institutes, and also to undertake an individual research project as part of a doctoral programme.
