Sprachen und Kulturen finnisch-ugrischer und sibirischer Völker [Languages and Cultures of Finno-Ugric and Siberian Peoples]

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The program Languages and Cultures of Finno-Ugric and Siberian Peoples replaces the Finnougristik program from winter semester 2022/23. It examines the connections between language and culture (Anthropological Linguistics), combining linguistic methods and theories with concepts from ethnology and cultural studies. The study provides fundamental structural knowledge in languages of two Finno-Ugric peoples of Europe with their own statehood: Finnish and Hungarian. These skills serve as a foundation for describing and researching endangered languages. The language courses provide linguistically-based technical terminology and encourage autonomous learning strategies. Knowledge can be further developed through stays abroad. The education is complemented by fundamentals of general Finno-Ugric studies and basic knowledge about the languages and peoples of the Uralic language family, which extends geographically across large areas of Eastern and Northern Europe and Siberia.
