SoziologieSociology

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Sociology aims at explaining and understanding social actions at the micro level (e.g., family), meso level (e.g., organizations), and macro level (e.g., societies). Sociological theories and analyses cover a wide variety of social issues. The focus is on social structures and their changes, forms of community and socialization, social structures, institutions, and cultural phenomena that emerge from human actions and shape them. Based on empirical research and in close contact with neighboring disciplines, sociological analyses contribute to the diagnosis of social problems and conflicts, identify development potentials and possible solutions, and criticize social misconceptions. The connection between theory and practice is achieved through project work within research internships. Students should have a great interest in social phenomena. Politics, history, and current events are just as important as the question of why people interact in certain ways. Good high school knowledge in a modern foreign language (preferably English) and in social studies/politics facilitates the start of studies. Since many empirical studies on social science issues require confident handling of data and statistics, good mathematical skills are also important for the sociology program.
