About the Program

The Master of Arts in Southeast European Studies teaches students how to conduct independent academic work in a traditional interdisciplinary field. Students will be able to recognize, analyse, and present complex interconnections using a wide range of factual and methodical knowledge. The program focuses on methods of historical studies, modern linguistics, historical-comparative linguistics, literature and cultural studies, research on nationalism and ethnicity, European ethnology and social anthropology, and comparative and interdisciplinary questions. Core disciplines at the University Jena are South Slavonic Studies, Romanian Studies and Eastern European History. Students will perfect their skills by studying abroad or doing an internship in Southeast Europe. Courses in two languages should be taken to improve proficiency, with at least 10 credits earned in one of the following Southeast European languages: Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian, Bulgarian, or Romanian. Graduates have advanced skills in public presentation of academic concepts and profound understanding of Southeast European languages and cultures, preparing them for various professions in Southeast Europe, international organizations, or further academic study.
