Social Work and Education

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

Social Work and Education (M.A.) is a consecutive, part-time blended learning degree program. It combines internet-based, discursive studies via a learning platform with on-campus blocks in eight distance learning modules. On-campus teaching is carried out during four modules with ten study days in the form of block courses (each taking place on Friday/Saturday). An action research project accompanied by lecturers is an integral part of the degree program. The degree program deals with education in all age groups in the field of out-of-school education. Differentiated action and research approaches are combined in order to address the heterogeneous conditions of education in our society and the resulting didactic challenges. One third of the modules are designed to impart general skills in the field of theory and research in social work as well as leadership and management; two thirds are related to the specialized field of education. The concept of individual learning agreements enables students to set personal priorities with a view to their own qualification goals, on the basis of the general knowledge they have already acquired. The degree program qualifies students for a career as educational advisors in all areas of out-of-school education. They have the necessary competencies for management positions in educational institutions, educational management and educational planning as well as for scientific work in research institutes. With a master's degree, graduates have the option of pursuing a doctorate at the Inter-University Doctoral Research Center for Social Work.
