Social studies

Master of Education (M.Ed.)

About the Program

The Master of Education in Social Studies (Sozialkunde) program deepens and expands the academic and didactic knowledge acquired in the Bachelor of Education. Students engage intensively with political and social decision-making processes and the institutions of the German political system, learning to prepare these complex contents for teaching in secondary schools (levels I and II). The program sharpens students' awareness of current social and political developments and how to address these in Social Studies classes. Students can set their own focus areas through a wide selection of didactic seminars, including education for sustainable development, excursions to political learning sites, simulation games, promotion of political judgment skills, and dealing with populism, right-wing extremism, and group-focused enmity. The program consists of three main areas: Politics and Political Communication, Academic Specialization, and Cross-cutting Issues in Political Context. Students also complete a 15-day internship at a high school.
