Slavonic Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

Students in the Master of Arts in Slavonic Languages, Literatures, and Cultures can choose between three specialisation areas: Slavonic Studies with an Eastern focus, Slavonic Studies with a Southern focus, and Eastern European Cultural Studies. The Slavonic Studies with an Eastern focus option has the primary goal of improving students' knowledge and understanding of the language, literature, and culture of Russia as well as one or two other countries: Poland and the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, or Serbia and Croatia. The Slavonic Studies with a Southern focus option emphasises the languages, literatures, and cultures of Southern Slavonic peoples in their historic and modern-day forms. Its scope includes Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia, and Bulgaria. It also addresses the many cultural and ethnic connections on the Balkan peninsula. Study of the Russian language is a secondary component of this programme. The Eastern European Cultural Studies option teaches advanced skills and methods for studying Slavic literature and linguistics as well as the history of Eastern Europe. In addition to Russian, students may take language courses in Polish, Czech, and/or Georgian. Finally, students are encouraged to take additional courses from disciplines such as political science, cultural management, intercultural business communication, Caucasus studies, and Russian law.
