Slavic Studies Eastern European - specialisation Russian Studies

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

Slavic Studies/Eastern European Studies with a specialization in Russian Studies compares different Slavic languages, literatures, and cultures with each other and with non-Slavic language and cultural circles. The Russian specialization focuses on Russia's literature, culture, history, and language. The program explores cultural contexts and conflicts that shape Europe as a major region, the role of Russia, the evolution of the Russian language, the contexts of Russian literature and its relationship to neighboring countries' literatures, and how Russia's geographical and cultural position between Europe and Asia affects its self-understanding. Students become familiar with modern literary and cultural theories, learn to analyze linguistic and cultural phenomena using methodological-theoretical approaches, and explore connections between linguistic structures, human thought patterns, and phenomena from religion, society, and culture. Students acquire excellent language skills in Russian and basic knowledge in a second language (Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, or Czech). The program offers three profile options: Philology (Linguistics and Literature), Literature and History, or Linguistics.
