About the Program

This program prepares students to become primary school teachers with a focus on General Studies (Sachunterricht). The program explores how children develop their worldview and how it changes, teaching methods, and approaches to elementary understanding. Students are introduced to theories and concepts of General Studies education and study different models of teaching and learning. Mid-way through the program, students must choose to specialize in either humanities or natural sciences. The program covers sociocultural perspectives (theories of social action and learning), spatial perspectives (theories of spatial perception), scientific perspectives (biological, physical, chemical foundations), historical perspectives (family and regional history), and didactic foundations. Upon completion of the program with the First State Examination (Staatsexamen), graduates can enter a teaching internship (Referendariat) as the second phase of teacher training. The degree is equivalent to a Master's degree and qualifies graduates for doctoral studies.
