About the Program

The Romance Language and Literature program focuses on the language, literature, and culture of Romance languages that developed from Latin. The program in Saarbrücken offers three specializations: French, Spanish, and Italian studies, each covering linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies/regional studies, and oral/written communication in the respective language. The program also offers career-oriented courses. The Bachelor's degree aims to provide in-depth knowledge of the respective language, literature, and culture. The study program provides access to further Master's programs and qualifies graduates for various professions in fields such as culture, media, publishing, education, science, and tourism. Romance studies can be studied as a major or minor subject within the 2-subject Bachelor's program, with students choosing one Romance language (French, Italian, or Spanish). Spanish Romance studies can also be studied as an extended major. It's possible to combine two Romance languages as (extended) major and minor subjects. A 6-week internship in the country of the target language is required for both major and minor subjects. Since Winter Semester 2019/2020, a double degree program with the University of Seville is available for Spanish Romance studies, which takes 8 semesters instead of 6, with the third year spent in Seville.
