About the Program

The Hasso Plattner Institute's Research Schools offer an outstanding environment for doctoral researchers in computer science and digital technologies. At HPI, you benefit from close supervision by experienced professors and postdocs, cutting-edge research facilities, and a collaborative academic network, e.g. with the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of California Irvine (UCI). "Systems Design" Research School The design and implementation of modern, practical, and interesting software systems raises a multitude of research questions from several fields such as software and domain engineering, system modelling and analysis, application adaptability and integration, human computer interaction, security, and sustainability.  To be and remain useful to their users, software systems not only need to offer the functionality desired or required in an approachable way, but they must do so in a way fitting their application context and their operational constraints.  "Systems Design” represents an engaging symbiosis of proven research frameworks to address this challenge, integrating the points-of-views of multiple research communities and allowing for an interconnected approach to state-of-the-art computer science research. This research school builds on a 20-year history and developed out of the "Service-Oriented Systems Engineering" research school.
