About the Program

Religious Studies (Religionswissenschaft) examines how different religions function in history and present, what forms they take, how they change, and what they mean for individuals, groups, and society as a whole. At the University of Erfurt, the focus is on the traditions that have shaped European culture: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as well as ancient religious history. Religious plurality in a global context is particularly central. The program is represented by four subject areas: General Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, and Cultural History of Orthodox Christianity. Certificate students engage in depth with at least two different areas.
