Public History

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The Master's program in Public History teaches competencies in the analysis, production, and presentation of historical narratives. This research-oriented program focuses on the diverse practices of creating history and the media formats in which history is produced, distributed, and received in the past and present. Students learn how history emerges under specific temporal, spatial, technical, cultural, and social conditions and how it can be used discursively. The program aims to impart analytical and generative historical competence, including the ability to analyze different types of history in their respective contexts, critically reflect on them, and creatively produce them. Students acquire knowledge about existing historical representations and the skills for independent conception and implementation of historical projects. An essential component of the studies is the mentoring program, where students reflect on their study progress, document their development in a learning journal, and curate a portfolio presenting their work. The program also promotes critical awareness of the representation of history and its social and political significance through engagement with interdisciplinary methods from humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences. Additionally, students acquire basic knowledge in project management and process evaluation.
