About the Program

The Protestant Theology program qualifies students to research and analyze biblical foundations, identify the significance of Christian theological perspectives in understanding individual life and societal reality, competently represent Christian belief in different contexts of church and society, and bring insights of Protestant theology into constructive conversation with today's living environment. Two different degrees can be obtained: the Magister Theologiae as an academic degree, or the First Theological Examination at a national church ("Ecclesiastical Examination"/KEX) which is followed by a second training phase (Vicariate) before transferring to pastoral service. The program includes study in classical theological disciplines such as Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, Systematic Theology/Social Ethics, and Practical Theology. While many graduates pursue pastoral service, theologians also have excellent employment prospects in fields outside the church, including educational institutions, cultural institutions and media, social fields, human resources, therapeutic counseling, administrative institutions, and research.
