About the Program

The performative arts class deals with temporal and spatial compositions that arise from the bodily perspectives of the experiential, the relational, the vocal, and the situational. Drawing from methodologies including contemporary dance, experimental voice performance, improvisation scores, audio/video performance, participatory art, and public conversation, this class aims to strengthen individual performative practices, educate critical eyes and ears, and help students find their artistic voice through performance. The class was established as a six-year project by Isabel Lewis in 2021 and is currently led by choreographer Jule Flierl and media artist Anna Zett until its planned end in September 2027. The class emphasizes somatic vocal and movement training, experimental choreography, consensual communication, and group analysis. It centers around the voice as both material and symbolic medium, with regular performance practice and frequent work-in-progress showings using scores for supportive group feedback.
