Osteuropastudien [Eastern European Studies]Eastern European Studies

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The minor degree program in Eastern European Studies provides students with the opportunity to engage comprehensively with the changing conditions in Eastern Europe, which are becoming increasingly important in relation to EU eastern enlargement. The courses deal with culture, history, politics, law, economics, and geography of Eastern Europe. The curriculum ranges from conveying basic historical knowledge to addressing questions of legal system transformation, changes in the political landscape, and the integration of Eastern European states into political, economic, and military organizations, as well as numerous cultural studies and language courses. The program aims to enable students to analyze and interpret developments in Eastern Europe and place them in broader contexts. This includes knowledge of at least one Eastern European language. The program involves not only the University of Hamburg (Faculties of Law, Economics and Social Sciences, Humanities, and Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences) but also the Helmut-Schmidt University, the Hamburg World Economics Institute, and the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy.
