About the Program

The International Bachelor's program in East Asia (IBO) at the University of Hamburg offers intensive language training, solid knowledge of the East Asian cultural sphere, and a chosen regional focus in history and present. The study takes place predominantly in small groups with state-of-the-art technical equipment and personal supervision. The program includes a stay abroad at a university in the respective region, as well as introductions to academic work and career orientation. The four-year IBO with a focus on Japan provides in-depth knowledge of Japanese language and culture in an interdisciplinary and intercultural context. The Japanese Studies department in Hamburg has existed since 1914 and is the oldest academic representation in Germany. The aim of the program is the scientific examination of the language and culture of Japan using sources in Japanese. The so-called 'Hamburg Model' combines historical knowledge and current affairs, aspects of Japanese culture (literature, intellectual and cultural history), and the areas of society and politics.
