About the Program

The 'Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies' program provides scientifically sound knowledge about Byzantine and Modern Greek literature and culture in their respective social and intellectual-historical contexts. This includes basic knowledge of the recent history of Greece as well as basic knowledge of current events in politics, media and society. A special feature of the program is the orientation towards Greece and Cyprus, as well as the mandatory stay in one of these two countries. Students become familiar with essential questions in literary and cultural studies and acquire, in addition to subject-specific qualifications, the ability to relate these to other problem areas in a future profession and to apply them in a scientifically reflected manner. As part of the program, students learn the Modern Greek language at a level that enables them to communicate confidently both orally and in writing.
