Molecular biology

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

About the Program

The Molecular Biology program started in the winter semester 2019/20 at the Faculty of Biology. The goal of this interdisciplinary education is to understand the molecular mechanisms of biological processes in high resolution and to learn the principles and processes of scientific knowledge acquisition in this field. These biological processes include the healthy wild type, the pathologically deregulated, and the organism treated with active substances. The program covers understanding of the four macromolecule classes (DNA, proteins, lipids, and sugars), their synthesis, assembly, modification, and degradation, their interactions, and the consequences of these interactions. It also includes subcellular structures and compartments, signal transduction, and metabolic processes including their natural regulation and the consequences of pathological deregulation. The third level concerns the physiology of healthy and diseased model organisms. Additionally, subject-related basic knowledge of chemistry, mathematics, and physics, as well as philosophy and ethics are taught.
