About the Program

The Master's course "Modern Societies and Cultures" is a consecutive, research-oriented study programme based on a completed relevant Bachelor's degree. It responds to sociological diagnoses of current social challenges, focusing on how conflicts in contemporary societies are increasingly expressed in cultural terms. The program explores the concept of culture from the perspective of social self-organisation, examining culture as a normative instance, an object of conflict, and a resource. Students acquire sociological reflection knowledge and articulation skills through activating forms of teaching and learning, and through cooperation with other institutes of Justus Liebig University.
