About the Program
Medieval Studies at the University of Hamburg offers a unique minor program in Germany: It is specifically aimed at Bachelor's students who are interested in the fascinating world of the European Middle Ages in all its facets. The minor opens up the possibility of approaching this era from the perspective of two different, individually chosen disciplines. At the same time, Medieval Studies conveys the basic methodological knowledge of the two disciplines and thus guides students to think and research beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. Students gain an overview of the era, its history, culture and literature, as well as insight into time and culture-specific characteristics typical of the Middle Ages. Students choose a main focus area and an additional area. The main focus areas available are the medieval teaching areas of 'German Language and Literature', 'History', and 'Art History'. The additional area can also be chosen from these three subjects or from other offerings such as English/American Studies, Byzantine Studies, Protestant Theology, History of Natural Sciences, Historical Musicology, Romance Studies, Prehistoric and Early Historical Archaeology/Medieval Area, or Latin Studies.
