About the Program

Metropolitan areas are central places of cultural production and practice. They function as a lens and driver of social transformations. The concept of culture underlying this includes all things, practices, and technologies made by humans and related to them. Accordingly, the study program "Culture - Digitalization - Metropolis" is diverse and varied. As a combination of theory, cultural studies project work, and career orientation, the bachelor's program has been offered at HafenCity University since the winter semester 2023/2024, representing a further development of the previous study program "Culture of the Metropolis". The field of study is urban space, its social heterogeneity, and the cultural diversity of cities, taking into account digital transformation processes. Metropolitan areas represent complex structures where different ways of life and diverse everyday cultures meet. How sustainable coexistence in urban agglomerations will be possible in the future - for example against the background of the increasingly urgent climate crisis - is a central question of cultural studies urban research, as pursued in the study program "Culture - Digitalization - Metropolis". Digital processes will also play a decisive role here. Therefore, it is necessary to critically accompany and reflect on digitalization processes themselves from a cultural studies perspective, not least in the everyday practical dimensions of lived urbanity.
