About the Program

The Master of Arts in Medieval Studies at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena offers an interdisciplinary approach to the historical development of the cultural diversity in the Middle Ages (approx. 500 to 1500 AD) in Europe and the rest of the world. In addition to the four core disciplines (German Medieval Studies, Art History, Medieval History/ Thuringian History, Latin philology of the Middle Ages), students can take courses in a wide variety of other subjects that are not all offered at other universities (Old English Studies, Old Romance Studies, Arabic Studies, German Linguistics, Indo-Germanic Studies, Ecclesiastical History, Music Studies, Prehistory and Early History). Special features include the flexibility for students to create their own area of specialisation. Career opportunities for graduates include positions at museums, libraries, archives, and monuments, educational intermediation and public relations, as well as other fields requiring quick analytic and excellent communication skills. Graduates may also choose to earn a Ph.D. and pursue a career in academe.
